July is UV Safety Awareness Month

Summer is upon us, which means more time spent outdoors. Just like you protect your skin, it’s important to protect your eyes!
Overexposure to the sun’s UV rays in a short period of time can cause photokeratitis, which is like getting a sunburn on your eye. This usually causes your eyes to appear red, have a gritty feeling, and be extra sensitive to light. While photokeratitis doesn’t usually cause permanent damage to your eyes, exposure to the sun can increase your risk for developing cataracts or macular degeneration.
Keep your eyes healthy and always wear sunglasses that offer UV protection or a hat when you are in the sun.
